Born in Nottingham on 19th October 1868 son of George T and Emma GROVES (née SAYWELL).
1871 census...Aged 2, he was at 13 Raleigh Street, Nottingham with his father George GROVES [27] a newspaper reporter born Newark; his mother Emma [27] born Nottingham; sister Ann T [4] born Radford and Florence L [2 months] born Nottingham. 1881 census...Aged 12, he was at 25 Fir Street, Sheffield with his parents and sister Annie [6] born Sheffield. 1891 census...Not identified in this census but was on electoral roll in 1897 at South View, Twickenham. 1901 census...Aged 31, a journalist, he was at South View, Whitton Road, Twickenham with his widower father (journalist/author) and sister Annie. He married Florence Gertrude REEDER in 1902 in the City of London. At around the time of his death, they lived at 9 Tangier Road, Richmond, Surrey. 1911 census...Aged 42, a journalist with the Sportsman newspaper, he was at 58 Haldon Road, Wandsworth with his wife Florence [36] born Needham Market, their daughter Doris May [8] born Shepherds Bush, and his widowed mother in law Ellen REEDER [58] born Hertford. The electoral roll for Wandsworth for 1907 until 1912 has him at 58 Haldon Road. In 1914 and 1915 he was at 18 Thornton Road,Kingston upon Thames. In the 1938 register he was staying at the Bull Hotel, High Street, Newmarket. His wife was at 9 Tangier Road, Richmond. George was a sports journalist, previously had played as a guest player for Woolwich Arsenal and had 12 games for Sheffield United between 1891 and 1896. he then played cricket, in 17 first class matches for Nottinghamshire 1899 and 1900. He became a sports writer for the Sporting Chronicle and it was in their office in Newmarket that he was killed. He died in Eaton House, High Street, Newmarket
